Honolulu, Hawaii, October 15, 2011 - Derby For Change, a new global campaign amongst the roller derby community, is sponsoring "International Domestic Violence Awareness Day." Skaters and derby leagues all over the world will be hosting events, passing out flyers, and working with local domestic violence ...organizations to increase awareness of the growing epidemic.

What started as a simple Facebook group, has rapidly turned into a worldwide movement with skaters from more than 19 countries committed to making a change through awareness and action campaigns. With October being recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, this group of motivated and talented skaters and supporters have deemed Oct. 15 "International Domestic Violence Awareness Day." Each day, more and more leagues are joining the cause, and pledging to increase awareness in a variety of ways.

According to Roller Derby Worldwide (www.derbyroster.com), there are more than 1,050 derby leagues internationally. Support for Derby For Change has been overwhelming as volunteers from the community are building a website, locating tools and links, and assisting victims of abuse and violence to begin healing.

The group was inspired by Lori Milkeris, also known as, Lmbr Timber Onu of Emerald Coast Roller Derby (Milton, Fla.), who was recently the victim of a domestic assault that nearly killed her. The attack motivated fellow skaters and supporters to band together, and begin increasing domestic violence awareness.
The group has big plans for action following the Awareness Day event.

Local leagues are creating new ideas and resources to help, including Pacific Roller Derby's Red and Black Scrimmage to raise awareness of Domestic Violence in our community.
